Students participated in a special program last week to honor local veterans.

Leading the Pledge of Allegiance were Pre-K students Layla Moore and Eva Lewis, dressed in the patriotic best.

Veterans were given the mic to speak about their experience in serving in the armed forces.

They included Corporal Gehr Kirgis who served eight years in the Army, and Master Sargent Roger Hardie (Retired) who served twenty-one active duty in the Air Force, as well as twenty-three years Air Force Junior ROTC instructor in Georgia and Corsicana.

A 2005 graduate of Wortham High School, Michael Smith  joined the military after a year of college and is currently in his 17th year of service.

Smith has done two tours to Iraq. Other missions include hurricane harvey, operation lonestar at the border, riots, food drives, and covid missions.

“I am a 19 delta (19D) cavalry scout which specializes in reconnaissance and soon will transition to 11 bravo (11B) infantry.” said Smith.

He and his wife have two daughters.
