Restoration Began in 2002…
Citizens of Teague and the surrounding area are cordially invited to attend the Teague Historical Preservation Society’s “Open House” at the historic Teague Hotel on Sunday afternoon, May 30th, from 2 – 4 p.m.
The Teague Hotel is located at 201 Elm Street, adjacent to the B-RI Railroad Museum.
The TPHS formed in 2002 and purchased the badly dilapidated building for $30,000 and saved the historic landmark from being torn down for the brick used in its construction.
The bottom floor has been available for rental to citizens and organizations since 2018. The second story, which contains four of the five hotel rooms plus a large observation room, was just recently completed. Citizens are encouraged to tour the entire facility and enjoy punch and cookies with proud board members.
THPS board members recognize the completed renovations to the landmark could not have been possible without the many volunteers and citizens who have supported the project over the past 19 years. The majority of the renovations were funded by proceeds from the TPHS’s Thrift Store on Main Street.
In 1908 the American Brewing Association announced they were building a new brick building in the booming railroad town of Teague. The facility opened as the L. P. Golden Saloon and housed a Saloon, restaurant and barber shop downstairs and a rooming house upstairs. Plans were cut short for the new Saloon just a couple of years later as the sale of alcohol in Teague was outlawed by local election in late 1909. The facility changed hands over 20 times before being bought in 2002 by the THPS in 2002.
