Jane Dunnewold:  Inspired by the Masters

After Jane Dunnewold viewed an exhibition of the work of French artist Henri Matisse at the San Antonio Museum of Art, she realized that the colors and unique perspective in his still life paintings made her “very happy.” And she could not get the “wild patterns” out of her head.

In a stroke of inspiration, Dunnewold decided to incorporate vintage textiles by anonymous makers from her collection into a quilt series as an homage to Matisse and other masters, linking fine art and craft “in a dance of old and new.” She used a wide variety of materials, but the techniques are all her own in these 14 quilts. Museum Curator Dr. Sandra Sider adds that Dunnewold “has manipulated vintage textiles with humor and aplomb in her unique interpretations of modern masterpieces.”

Antique Indigo Quilts from the Poos Collection

When Kay Triplett began purchasing antique quilts many years ago, she paid tribute to her maternal grandmother by naming the Collection after her. Over the course of a lifetime, the Poos Collection of quilts and other textiles has been amassed from antique shops, international travel, estate sales, auctions, dealers, and gifts.

The Poos Collection has been featured in books, exhibitions, and educational presentations. These 19th-century treasures showcase exquisite hand quilting and the gorgeous contrast of vibrant blue on white. Dr. Sider offers, “Many of the patterns are traditional favorites, several with innovative aspects indicating an artist’s eye at work. This exhibition is truly a spectacular example of antique indigo quilts.” There are a total of 25 quilts in this exhibit.
