Congratulations to Freestone County Times Editor, Karen Leidy, for taking First Place in Editorials this year in the annual Texas Better Newspaper contest sponsored by Texas Press Association.

Her entries included an argument for fully funding The Arts in public schools, and a self-professed ‘kryptonite’ that weakens her editorial powers on press day: a profusion of excellent football pictures to sift through and select each week.

And on that note, The ‘Times’ team earned Second Place in Sports Photography.

“Great celebration shot,” said the judges.

Sports photos included the Fairfield Lady Eagles trip to the State Basketball tournament in 2023, Teague Lions Football, Fairfield Eagles Football, and Wortham Lady Bulldogs Basketball.

Good job, by sports photographers Payton Botelho, Jessica Risken, Natalia V. Marsters, and Jennifer Lansford.

Freestone County Times also took Third Place for Advertising, Page Design (“stories and photos are very dynamic, appealing and flow well”), and Sports Coverage.

And, the newspaper was awarded Fourth Place for overall General Excellence.

Great job, everyone!
