We were talking about how much the cows like summer rather than winter.  Talking as if we knew for sure, mind you!  The Colonel says, sure you can tell they like summer better…unless there is a drought.  They like summer better because they like having plenty of water to drink and lots of grass to eat.  He said they eat their fill, take a big long drink, lie down, and chew their cud.  Nothing to do but just laze around enjoying the good ole summer time.  In the winter time, he went on, they eat what we feed them and when the bale is all gone there is not enough grass to satisfy them and they have to wait until the next feeding day.  Sometimes if the temperature is cold enough they can’t even get a drink unless we go to knock a hole in the ice…that hasn’t happened for a while!  Then there is there is the wind that blows the cold temperature around them, a cold rain or snow to make it more miserable, and on and on.
This conversation went on to discuss which we like to work in better…summer or winter.  I said I liked the summer time better because I don’t like to be cold and my hands and feet always get so cold during feeding season.  Of course The Colonel said he liked winter time better.   But then he did ask me if I was going to order some more of the hand warmer things I always get that we put in our gloves.  I told him this year I was going to order the warmers for our boots too.  Here it is only August and we at the Red Oak Ranch are talking about winter!!
