“We are in very early communications,” Fairfield Mayor Kenny Hughes told the Freestone County Times on Monday, July 16, 2018.  “I am very excited about it, if it all works out for us, in getting the property.”

Following a second closed Executive Session during last week’s Regular Scheduled Meeting, Fairfield Council approved issuance of a Letter of Intent and directed Council Member Landis Bayless to complete a Feasibility Study on the possible purchase of Real Estate from HelpingHomeowners for a new, City Hall.

According to Mayor Hughes, Navarro College has plans to shut down the Fairfield campus due to low interest.  They contacted the City of Fairfield to gauge interest in the property.

“It is a very large facility, and the main building has been totally redone,” says Mayor Hughes. “There is room in it for a humungous Council chamber, which we need.”

Once a Feasibility Study has been completed, the Council will continue discussion on possible purchase, exchange, or lease of the property.

While Mayor Hughes is unable, at this time, to discuss the cost of the possible project, he states, “It’s a very good price.”

Also discussed during the July 10, 2018 meeting were several items concerning road signs, speed bumps, parking stripes, and street lights.  These items were presented by citizens Randall Whitaker, Dale Schaefer, and Councilman James Tyus.

As needed, Public Works Director Clyde Woods and Sgt. David Utsey were asked to research each issue and report back to Council during a future meeting.

Citizen Roger Fantroy initiated discussion of use of the City’s Rodeo Arena.

Although their non-profit group had used the Arena in the past for Team Roping practice, they had recently been informed of insurance requirements by the City.  “This would be pricey, for what we are doing,” said Fantroy.

After brainstorming a few options, City Secretary Misty Richardson was directed to conduct further research about possible changes to the City’s insurance coverage.

“This is about protecting the City[‘s liability], and you,” stated Mayor Hughes.

Fairfield Council is meeting this week on Tuesday, July 17, 2018 at Sam’s Restaurant for a Workshop to discuss future plans of the City of Fairfield, in anticipation of the upcoming budget process.  Workshop is scheduled to begin at 6:00 p.m.

Council will meet in Regular Session next Tuesday, July 24, 2018.  Mayor Kenny Hughes is expected to sign a proclamation declaring Miss Texas Day in honor of Fairfield alum, Madison Fuller.
