Three 3rd Place Awards were given to Freestone County Times for this year’s entries in the Texas Press Association Better Newspaper Contest.

Publisher Scott W. Marsters, Sr. and Editor Karen E. Leidy took 3rd Place for Editorials written during the 2016 election season.

Judge’s comments:  “To those who would limit community conversation – especially during a candidates’ forum – this editorial has the answer:  Ask questions? It is an appropriate reminder of what happens in the engine room of democracy. The second editorial, simple and direct, properly elevates experience in the race for mayor.”

Well done to our sports photographers: Melissa Lee, Jennifer Lansford and Monte Calame, for their 3rd Place win in Sports Photography.

Judge’s comments:  “Very little separates the winners in this category.  And, every photographer or photo team has entered excellent work.  Freestone County Times photographers are pros at work, delivering great action and imagination from a variety of sports events.  From a layup to a football team taking over a field, from a hurdle in airborne full stride to an attempted baseball pickoff or a football carrier outrunning the tacklers, these images are filled with information and energy.”

Finally, good job to all the staff for their contributions in bringing home 3rd Place for General Excellence.

Judge’s comments:  Great overall coverage, nice job.

The annual contest is open to all newspapers in the State of Texas. Individual newspapers compete among their peers with similar reader circulation.

Congratulations to our award-winning staff.
