The meeting for the Jonathan Hardin Chapter Daughters of the American Revolution held its last meeting for the year on Wednesday, May 10, 2017 at the Gibbs Memorial Library in Mexia, Texas.
Regent Aleece McBay welcomed members and guest.  Honored guest included our scholarship recipient, Logan Capers, State Chaplain Kay Alston, and State Treasurer Susan Lemon.
The Jonathan Hardin Chapter offered a scholarship this year for a high school senior in Freestone and Limestone Counties who plan to attend an accredited 2 year, 4 year, or vocational/trade school in the United States.
The applicant is to be committed to using education to better their life and that of their family and /or community.  There were 31 seniors applying for the 2017 scholarship.  This years recipient is Logan J. Capers of Wortham High School, and  the son of Bill and Jennifer Capers.
Logan has shown leadership skills, community involvement, awards and accomplishments in school and extra curricular activity.
Chaplain Kay Alston introduced our speaker State Treasurer Susan Lemon.  Mrs. Lemon has been a member of DAR over 30 years.  She is a former Regent of the Lady Washington Chapter and now lives in Caldwell, Texas where she is a member of the William Scott Chapter.  Mrs. Lemon gave us a brief overview of “DAR 101”, how to access the web sites, committees both national, state and local, and how DAR is changing to meet the needs of today’s DAR daughters.  Mrs. Lemon stressed finding something you are interested in and working on that committee.  Throughout the program Susan threw in stories that we could relate.

Mrs. Lemon spoke about the State Regents Project which is to support the Historic Gown Collection of the First Ladies of Texas housed at the Texas Woman’s University, Denton, Texas.  These gowns represent the inaugural gowns of the first ladies beginning with the Republic of Texas 1836 to the present day.
Any woman 18 years or older, regardless of race, religion, or ethnic background, who can prove lineal descent from an ancestor who aided in achieving American independence is eligible for membership.  For more information about joining the Jonathan Hardin Chapter, NSDAR please contact Regent Aleece McBay at 254-729-5177, or Registrar Billie Bournias at 903-389-3592.
