vfw_chili_cookoff_first_place_111616TAKING HOME THE FIRST PLACE prize for his outstanding chili is Mark Thompson. Congratulating him are Auxiliary Ladies Shirley Pickens (left) and Genny Guthrie.

“The Auxiliary truly appreciates all of the businesses and community members for their generous donations,” exclaims Genny Guthrie. “We also thank the community for a great turn out and for their support this, and every, year.”
The Fairfield VFW Auxiliary’s Annual Chili Cook-off, held Saturday evening, November 12th, was a success, according to Genny. After expenses, the group will be able to donate about $1,000 to the Cancer Research Center for Veterans in Temple and to St. Jude’s.
Chili judges, Sheriff Elect, Jeremy Shipley; Prior Sheriff, Ralph Billings; Commissioner Pct #1, Luke Ward, Sr.; and Fairfield Lions Club’s Past District Governor & Current Tail-Twister, Gilbert Gatlin tasted nine chili entries and chose their top three favorites as winners.
Taking First Place was Mark Thompson, winning Second Place was Terry Hogan, and Third Place went Sandra Rankin. Each winner received a plaque to honor their win.
Following the judging and awards, Mr. Billings auctioned off 15 donated cakes and pies. The offerings consisted of pecan pies, cheese cake, Italian cream, red velvet, strawberry cake, coconut pie, and more.
There was also a large raffle with items donated from area businesses and community members including: Accessories Etc, Bella Nails, Creations, Jax & Charlie’s Car Wash, Déjà Vu, Hair Trends, Plant World, Ballard Company, Robinson Trading Post, Texas Outfitters, Dry Gulch Mercantile, Genny Guthrie, Lott’s Physical Therapy, Adrenaline Fitness, Brenda’s Closet, The Candle Shop, Napa, D&R, Sam’s Restaurant, Bush’s Chicken, Pizza Hut, Something Different, Kennedy’s Korner, O’Reilly Auto, Shirley Pickens, and Peach Workman.
