Wortham Advances to Quarterfinals While Fairfield & Teague End Playoff Bid

The Fairfield Lady Eagles, Teague Lady Lions and Wortham Lady Bulldogs all had playoff games this week with mixed results. The FAIRFIELD LADY EAGLES took to the court at University High School to take on the Gatesville Lady Hornets. Fairfield won the match three games to one and advanced to the area round. Ashlyn Scires had a couple of aces in the first game and the Lady Eagles took a slight lead and Braden Bossier served out the match to complete a 25-21 win in game one. Eagle Loss to Mexia Fueled by Turnovers 19-14

The Fairfield Eagles could not overcome six turnovers and lost their first district game of the season on the road at Blackcat Field where Mexia won 19-14. The loss keeps Fairfield in the top seed in District 9-4A Division II playoff race even though they are tied with the Salado Eagles at 3-1. Mexia, Conally and Lorena are tied for third and if the season ended today, the Lorena Leopards would miss the postseason. Bulldogs Lose Tough One at Homecoming 48-20

The Wortham Bulldogs took two big losses to open district play but were in the thick of the district race but the loss to Mount Enterprise put a serious hit on the Wortham playoff chances. The Bulldogs were dominated the entire night. Mount Enterprise fielded only 18 players and even had to forfeit the district opener to Tenaha due to lack of healthy players. The Wildcats defeated winless Overton last week to head to Wortham for an opportunity to clinch a playoff spot with a win. After a three and out for Wortham, the Bulldogs punted, and Mount Enterprise took over at the Wortham 43. Quarterback Jase Jones sprinted off on a 13-yard run and Kendre Miller finished the drive with a three-yard touchdown run. The point after was no good and the Wildcats led 6-0. Wortham took the kickoff and put together an impressive drive early in the game. Senior running back Stephon Ester had five carries on the drive, the last one for 25 yards to the Wildcat 11. Freshman Brevan Tobola passed to the near corner to a diving Ryan Mao for the 11-yard touchdown. The try for two was no good and the score was tied 6-6 midway through the first quarter. Lions Hold Off Goats in 22-20 Win

The Teague Lions scored with just over a minute to go in the game and held off the Groesbeck Goats 22-20 to stay in the chase for the district championship. Teague is one game back of Malakoff for the district lead and the Lions are tied with the West Trojans, but the Trojans hold the tiebreaker. Eustace, Whitney and Groesbeck are all at 2-3 with two games left and each will play each other during that time.
