County Spring Sports Review

Area teams took to facing the spring and weather to prepare and play for the playoffs. The Fairfield Lady Eagles softball team dropped a pair to Hillsboro on Friday and Saturday.  Hillsboro took game one with a big inning in a 9-7 win and game two was in Fairfield.  Hillsboro powered two fly balls over the fence and withstood a late rally by Fairfield to win the series 9-4. Teague took on Mildred in a pair.  The Lady Eagles dominated game one with a 14-1 game ended by the mercy rule.  Game two was a Mildred Lady Eagle win advancing them to the area round. Wortham golfer Hagan Proulx will take to the links in Austin with his qualifying rounds to earn him a spot in the state golf tournament.  He fired a 76 and 83 to finish seventh overall but Grapeland had four of the top six and their team will head to state and Proulx will compete as an individual medalist. Fairfield baseball will play top five Robinson for the second consecutive season.  The fourth place finishers in District 18-4A will host game one and two of the best of three series.  Game one will begin at 5 p.m. on Friday and the second game will starts approximately 30 minutes after the conclusion of game one. Eagles Headed to Regionals: Athletes to Compete in Huntsville

Over a dozen Fairfield tracksters will head to Huntsville’s Bowers Stadium for the Region III meet next weekend. Madison Smith took a first-place finish in the 3200-meter run ahead of teammate Morgan Coleman.  Both ladies will advance to the regional meet.  Smith had already punched a ticket to the regional meet with a third-place finish in the 800-meter run.  She finished behind Jordan Brock of Gatesville and Alana Armstrong of Lorena. Da’Meka Shed will also compete in two events in Huntsville.  She finished third in the 300 meter hurdles.  The event was won by Jade Bontke from Hillsboro and second was Lorena’s Tiffani Peacock.  Shed also finished fourth in the 110 hurdles in a close race won by Sha’rell Houff of Connally. Brandi Carter finished third in the 200-meter dash. Keara Birdow took second in the shot put in an event won by Alesis Juntunen of Lorena.  Josey Richardson finished fourth in the discus and Cali Gawryszewski had a third-place finish in the pole vault.  That event was dominated by Lorena’s Tiffani Peacock by two and a half feet. The mile relay team of Matilda Ohvo, Madison Smith, Da’Meka Shed and Iesha Jenkins finished third behind teams from LaVega and Connally. County Runners Advance in Competition

A few of track athletes in Freestone County qualified for regional track meets.  Teague area athletes will head to Hart Patterson track complex in Waco at Baylor University and Wortham area runners will take to Palestine High School.  All meets are next weekend. Teague Lady Lion Lizette Aguilera was a big winner in the area meet last week with a second-place finish in the 1600-meter run.  The event was won by Erin Derden of Rice.  She also finished second in the 3200-meter run also won by Derden. Teague Lady Lion Kylie Persons finished fourth in the 100-meter dash. Monica Guerrero took a fourth-place finish and was two inches shy of third in the shot put.  Macy Guerrero finished third in the triple jump. The Lady Lion sprint relay finished third in a close race behind Malakoff and Palestine Westwood and fourth in the 4×200 behind Westwood, Elkhart and Malakoff. Jaquaylin Daniels sprinted to a photo finish in the 110 meter hurdles.  Dawson Adams of Buffalo edged Daniels by 0.04 of a second. Jaylon Davis was second in the 400-meter dash in an event won by Crane Cash of Leon.  He finished fourth in the triple jump as well. Maverick Jewell took third in the 200-meter dash. Eagle Track Team Shines in Palestine Meet

The Fairfield Eagle track teams took a district title and a runner up position at the District 18-4A meet at Palestine High School last week.  The top four finishers in each event move onto the area meet in Lorena on Wednesday. Da’Meka Shed (Pictured at top) advanced as the winner in both the 100 and 300 meter hurdles.  She finished ahead of Chloe Olvera of Madisonville in both events. Kaitlynn Judd finished fourth in the 300 hurdles.  Shed also finished second in the triple jump and was only three inches from the winning jump from Dominique Lacy of Palestine....

County Track Teams Compete in District Meet

Teague and Wortham track teams competed in district and several advanced to the area meets.  Teague will host the area meet and Wortham teams will travel to Riesel for their next competition Jaylon Davis and Tayvis Coleman took the top two spots in the triple jump and were separated by a half inch.  Davis also finished second in the 400-meter dash. Marcus Williams won the shot put and finished second in the discus.  Daniels finished second in 100 meter hurdles.  McQuirter took a third-place finish in the 300 hurdles. The Teague 4×200 relay of Patrick, Coleman, Jewell and Heard won the district title with a photo finish over Elkhart.  The mile relay team finished second and the sprint relay finished third. Daniels took a fourth-place finish in the high jump. Angel finished fourth in the 3200-meter run and third in the mile. McNett finished fourth in the 800-meter run. Aguilera dominated the 3200-meter run with a 35 second win over Salley of Leon.  She had an equally easy time in the mile with a big first place finish and Arrezola finished fourth. The Teague sprint relay finished third and fourth in the 4×200.  The mile relay also qualified for area with a fourth-place finish.
